Using Troubleshooting Chart

If you are experiencing a problem that is not listed in this chart, see your John Deere dealer for service.

When you have checked all the possible causes listed and you are still experiencing the problem, see your John Deere dealer.

Engine

If

Check

Poor Engine Performance

Fuel:

ˇ Dirt in fuel system or fuel is old. Replace fuel with fresh stabilized fuel. Obtain fuel from another supplier before suspecting machine problems. Suppliers blend fuels differently and changing suppliers will generally solve any performance problems

ˇ Fuel blended for cold or warm climate may contribute to performance problems if used in the wrong season, especially if fuel is stored for several months or more. Obtain fresh fuel.

Engine Will Not Start

(Starter Does Not Engage)

ˇ Seat switch not being actuated due to seat spring adjustment being too stiff.

ˇ PTO switch is on.

ˇ Master brake pedal is not depressed.

ˇ Electrical problem - See Electrical Troubleshooting Section.

Engine Will not Start

(Starter Engages and Turns Engine)

ˇ Fuel shutoff valve is in off position.

ˇ Out of fuel or improper fuel.

ˇ Plugged fuel filter

ˇ Electrical problem - See Electrical Troubleshooting Section.

Engine Is Hard To Start

ˇ Improper use of choke or engine preheater.

ˇ Plugged fuel filter

ˇ Stale or improper fuel.

Engine Runs Unevenly

ˇ Choke not fully off.

ˇ Fuel line or fuel filter plugged.

ˇ Stale or dirty fuel.

ˇ Fuel injector clogged.

ˇ Air cleaner element plugged.

Engine Misses Under Load

ˇ Choke not fully off.

ˇ Stale or dirty fuel.

ˇ Plugged fuel filter.

Engine Overheats

ˇ Engine air intake screen plugged.

ˇ Engine coolant level is low.

ˇ Engine oil level is low or too high.

ˇ Engine operated too long at a slow idle speed.

Engine Will Not Idle

ˇ Choke not used properly.

ˇ Fuel level too low.

ˇ Air cleaner element dirty.

ˇ Operator raising off the seat without park brake locked.

Engine Knocks

ˇ Stale fuel.

ˇ Engine overloaded.

ˇ Low engine speed.

Engine Stops Or Misses When Operating On Hillsides

ˇ Fuel level too low.

ˇ Operator raising off of the seat.

Engine Backfires

ˇ Operator raising off of the seat.

Engine Loses Power

ˇ Engine overheating.

ˇ Too much oil in engine.

ˇ Dirty air cleaner.

ˇ Travel speed is too fast for conditions.

ˇ Improper fuel.

Black Exhaust Smoke

ˇ Choke not fully off.

ˇ Air filter element is dirty.


Electrical

Check

Starter Does Not Engage

ˇ Brake pedal is not depressed.

ˇ PTO switch is in on position.

ˇ Battery terminals are corroded.

ˇ Battery not charged.

ˇ Fuse is blown.

Battery Will Not Charge

ˇ Dead cell in the battery.

ˇ Battery cables and terminals are dirty.

ˇ Low engine speed or excessive idling.

Indicator Lamps Not Working

ˇ Light plug disconnected.

ˇ Loose or burned out bulb.

Check

Machine Will Not Move With Engine Running

ˇ Park brake locked.

ˇ Transaxle bypass valve plate is in engaged position.
